Bulky Waste

The Council's Environmental Services Department provides a bulky waste collection service to assist local householders with the removal of bulky waste items that cannot be deposited in their standard black bin. This service is available five days a week throughout most of the year (except public holidays) and must be booked in advance through direct contact with the Council.

Examples of Bulky Waste Materials would include:

Carpets, large electrical appliances (white goods), sofas, armchairs, dining tables, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bicycles, beds, mattresses, etc.,

Note – size and weight restrictions will apply. If an item cannot safely be transported by two personnel, it will not be collected.

Exceptions:

i.e. items that will not be collected by the Bulky Waste Service include:

Small electrical appliances (kettles, toasters) garden waste, trees, building materials, plaster board, oil tanks, dead animals, oil, grease, asbestos, hard core, paint tins, car batteries, glass, garden sheds, pianos.

Note: Small electrical items should be brought to your local Household Recycling Centre for proper disposal under the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment Directive.

The service is for domestic waste only and we are unable to take away any Trade or Commercial waste

Fees:

A charge of £10 will be payable, in advance, per bulky waste collection. A maximum of 5 items will be allowed per collection.

Service Request:

If you would like to request the bulky waste service, please contact the Council's Environmental Services Department directly on 028 4461 0819, where payment will be taken and a date for collection agreed.

Alternatively, call into any of the following Council buildings to request this service: 

  • Council Offices, Downshire Civic Centre, Downpatrick
  • Down Leisure Centre, Market St, Downpatrick
  • Ballynahinch Centre, Windmill St, Ballynahinch
  • Newcastle Centre, Central Promenade, Newcastle
  • Bridge Centre, Braeside Gardens, Killyleagh

The Council will then contact you and advise you of your date for collection.

While it will not be possible to specify the exact time of collection, all items will be collected between 8.00am and 5.00pm on the agreed date.

Service Requirements:

Bulky waste items must be ready for collection on the pavement at the front of your house, outside the curtilage of your property, by 8.00am on the day of collection. Items will not be collected from back gardens nor from inside your property.

Payment:

Please note, this service must be paid for in advance, at the time of booking. Several payment options are open to you and include payment in cash, by cheque, or debit/credit card. Cheques must be made payable to “Down District Council”. If you are paying by phone, please have your debit/credit card number ready.

Refunds:

If for some reason your circumstances change and you no longer require to avail of this service, a refund will be given, provided the request for service cancellation is received at least 48 hours before the planned collection date, otherwise the payment is non-refundable.
